Ta-da! Your favorite correspondent from Chubby mom’s house is back again…
As always, I'm here to review one of the souvenirs I picked up during my last trip to Japan!!
And today’s star is... Mom’s Furikake (Kasan no Furikake) — the Wasabi flavor, no less!!
(Just the name gives you that cozy, heartwarming, nostalgic, home-cooked meal vibe...)
Alright then, follow along closely from here...!!!

First, a quick introduction to Kasan no Furikake (Mom’s Furikake)!!
Kasan no Furikake (Mom’s Furikake)
- Where to Buy: Mega Don Quijote, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan
- Price: 300 yen (duty-free, 145g per pack)
- Contents: Furikake (seasoning to sprinkle on rice) – sesame seeds, seaweed, wakame, wasabi
- Flavor: Wasabi flavor, savory, slightly sweet
- How to Eat: Sprinkle over rice, use in rice balls (onigiri), or as a filling for inari sushi
Mom’s Furikake lives up to its name — as you can see in the photo below, the front of the package features an illustration of a warm, motherly figure (she looks so comforting...), along with a wasabi illustration, clearly indicating the wasabi flavor!
This product was purchased by Chubby mom’s family during their trip to Hokkaido last June, specifically at the Mega Don Quijote in Sapporo. It was Chubby mom herself who chose it, saying it would make the perfect rice topping for Dad!
As expected, the back of the package is neatly labeled with ingredients, calories, and expiration date — all the usual details.

The calories are quite high — 507 kcal per 100g! And since one pack is 145g, that means the total calories are even higher than that.
The expiration date is clearly printed at the bottom, but the shelf life isn’t particularly long.
(We'll cover this in another review later, but Chubby mom’s family also bought other furikake products, and this one had a much shorter expiration date compared to the others.
Not sure if we just happened to pick up one that was close to expiring… or if that’s normal.)

Also, the top part of the furikake bag is clearly marked for easy opening, and the resealable closure is well-designed for convenient storage.
As expected, if you grip the marked section and tear along the line — it opens smoothly and easily!

Here’s how it looks after tearing smoothly along the line… big kudos for that!
And once you open it and pour some into a dish, you can see the seasoned sesame seeds, wasabi bits, seaweed, and wakame!

I took a close-up shot to show you in detail (full of passion)!
If you look closely, you can see a shiny coating on the sesame seeds and wakame—looks like a sweet and savory seasoning!
And here and there, you can spot the green wasabi seasoning bits!!
Squeal! (I really love wasabi.)
As expected from a perfect rice topping, the flavor is salty and sweet with a punch of wasabi flavor bursting in the middle!!
This is definitely a rice thief — you won’t be able to stop eating it with your rice…

So this time, I decided to make rice balls using Mom’s Furikake…
I took some rice and rolled it around in the furikake like this…

Wow…!! Even I was surprised at how cute they turned out… they look so delicious…
I carefully rolled them around some more and pressed them firmly with my hands.

Oh, my first rice ball, carefully rolled and pressed…
But it looked a bit lonely, so I made two more…
And here are the three finished rice balls…
I actually ate them early in the morning for the sake of this review (sob sob).
But what’s this…? They turned out so good that I started to wonder if I actually have a knack for this!
Eating it as rice balls with the furikake, as expected… it’s truly a perfect rice side dish — a real rice thief!!
The salty and sweet flavors make the rice taste amazing!!
You don’t even have to make rice balls; just sprinkling it over plain rice tastes fantastic too!!

Ta-da! Furikake that Chubby mom and Dad both loved!!
If you’re someone who enjoys wasabi like Chubby mom’s family, you’ll definitely love this.
Plus, it’s packed with sesame seeds, so the nutty flavor is off the charts!!
If you’re traveling or planning a trip, I definitely recommend giving this a try!!

And with that, I’ll wrap up today’s post.
I hope this review is helpful to those planning a trip to Japan or anyone interested in Japanese products...
