Ta-da! Back again in the three-meals-a-day corner, this is Chubby mom’s correspondent. Today, it’s been a while, but I’d like to introduce another great restaurant. The place I’m introducing today is none other than a tonkatsu hotspot located super close to Samgakji Station—Donkatsu Palwol!
Its specialty is the low-temperature fried tenderloin tonkatsu, which is incredibly soft and flavorful. Also not to be missed are the delicious loin tonkatsu and the newly introduced shrimp katsu! Honestly, everything is so good that every time I go, I end up cleaning my plate. But beware—if you arrive even a little late, there’s always a line! Truly a hidden gem of Samgakji, Donkatsu Palwol. Let’s dive into the introduction now.

Below is a table of contents that allows you to jump to the section you want with a click, so please use it as a reference.

Menu and Prices at Donkatsu Palwol

I couldn’t take interior photos because the shop was packed with people, but the place is actually quite small. There are about two small four-person tables and two two-person tables, plus a counter-style seating area against the wall in the back that can fit around five people.
As shown in the photos above, Donkatsu Palwol offers three main set menus: Tenderloin Katsu Set, Loin Katsu Set, and Shrimp Katsu Set. The Shrimp Katsu Set wasn’t originally on the menu but seems to be a newly introduced dish by the owner. The owner is Japanese and extremely kind.
The prices are as follows
- Tenderloin Katsu Set – 14,000 KRW
- Loin Katsu Set – 13,000 KRW
- Shrimp Katsu Set – 15,000 KRW (the most expensive)
Chubby mom’s daughter and her friends love the Tenderloin Katsu Set the most. As you’ll see in the photo below, the inside looks slightly pink as if it’s undercooked, but it’s incredibly tender and has no fishy taste whatsoever—just really delicious.
As for the newly introduced Shrimp Katsu Set, which is the priciest, it looks from the photos like it isn’t made with whole shrimp but with minced shrimp formed into a katsu-style cutlet. I haven’t tried it yet, but I definitely plan to next time!
Tenderloin Katsu Set at Donkatsu Palwol

Ta-da! The photo above shows the Tenderloin Katsu Set, which is Chubby mom’s daughter’s favorite. The set basically includes tonkatsu served with cabbage salad, rice, pickled radish, miso soup, and condiments such as wasabi, mustard, and salt.
Once you place your order, the food doesn’t take long to arrive. On the table, you’ll also find cabbage dressing, tonkatsu sauce, salt, and pepper, so you can add more to suit your taste.

Chubby mom’s daughter especially loves the cabbage salad that’s served as part of the set. It’s sliced so thinly that it’s easy and pleasant to eat. At every table, there’s a dressing that pairs perfectly with the cabbage, and once you drizzle it on, it disappears in no time. Honestly, it’s the kind of dressing that could make even people who dislike cabbage eat it up in a flash.
Chubby mom’s daughter was so impressed by how finely the cabbage was shredded that she even asked the owner at the counter what kind of slicer he uses… And she finally managed to find out the exact slicer! Hehehe…
Review of the Tenderloin Katsu at Donkatsu Palwol

As briefly mentioned above, the tenderloin katsu, as shown in the photo, has a slightly pink center. At first glance, you might wonder, “Is it undercooked?” and worry that it could taste raw or fishy. But there’s absolutely no need to worry—it has zero fishy taste. Not even a hint. It’s just incredibly soft and unbelievably delicious.
I’m not entirely sure about the cooking method, but according to an explanation posted on the wall inside the restaurant, the tonkatsu is cooked at a low temperature, which makes it even more tender. Fascinating!
If you ask what the most popular menu item at Donkatsu Palwol is, the answer is definitely the tenderloin katsu. I highly, highly recommend it. The loin katsu is also tasty, but the tenderloin katsu takes it to the next level with its exceptional tenderness. On the day Chubby mom’s daughter and her friends visited—five people in total—all five of them ordered the tenderloin katsu set! That alone shows just how popular it really is.

Chubby mom’s daughter, as you can see in the photo above, prefers eating the katsu with a bit of wasabi on top, dipped lightly in salt and pepper. Just dipping it in salt and pepper alone already tastes amazing, but adding wasabi makes it even better. (She’s a true wasabi lover!) As mentioned earlier, there’s tonkatsu sauce on every table as well, so those who prefer it can pour some into a dish and dip away.
The six pieces of tonkatsu disappeared into our stomachs before we even realized it. Everyone who came that day finished every single item that came with the set. I can just imagine the owner and staff smiling as they cleared our plates… (maybe just my imagination). But honestly, it was unbelievably tender and delicious.
So, that wraps up today’s review of Donkatsu Palwol, truly a hidden gem near Samgakji—so popular that if you arrive even a little late, you’ll face a wait. The prices aren’t exactly cheap, but the taste absolutely justifies the cost. If you’re a tonkatsu lover, I highly recommend you come and try it for yourself.
That’s all for today’s foodie post. Bye!!
