Chubby Mom’s correspondent is back again!

Today, I’m going to post about a crispy and salty Japanese national snack. It’s definitely that snack many people have seen even in Korea!

Get ready for a review of this tasty, budget-friendly treat I picked up at Mega Don Quijote in Sapporo, Hokkaido, during my trip in June. (Excited much! 😄)

I bought so many things during my trip to Japan and was mostly happy with all of them, but today I want to introduce the ultimate budget-friendly snack: Umaibo!

Umaibo (Corn Potage & Pollock Roe Flavors)

  • Where to Buy: Mega Don Quijote in Sapporo, Hokkaido (but you can find it anywhere in Japan—and even in Korea!)
  • Flavors Purchased: Corn Potage and Pollock Roe (I picked the most popular ones)
    • Corn Potage: yellow packaging, savory and slightly salty
    • Pollock Roe: bright orange packaging, stronger salty and spicy flavor
  • Calories: 43–44 kcal per stick
  • Price: Around 100 yen for 10 sticks (tax-free; they’re pretty big and chunky, making the price super reasonable)
  • Features: Each flavor is distinctly different, salty and crispy, large but very affordable, delicious—truly Japan’s national snack!

The flavors that Chubby Mom’s family bought were Corn Potage and Pollock Roe! It was Chubby Mom’s son who picked Umaibo since it’s super famous anyway... Plus, it’s got that nostalgic taste! Once you open one, it’s seriously addictive.

But don’t worry—the calories aren’t too high! Compared to the Natori Chitara Cheese I posted about last time, Umaibo is much lighter. So you can enjoy it without guilt. It’s also pretty big and filling, making it a generous snack that’s surprisingly low in calories—definitely a great value!

Each individual stick has the expiration date clearly printed on the package—and like the others, the shelf life isn’t very long. Since I bought these at Mega Don Quijote, which was packed with tourists, the product turnover must be really high. Still, the expiration dates are pretty short—it seems that’s just how it is.

But don’t worry! Once you start eating them, they disappear in no time.

On the back, the ingredients and calorie information are clearly listed. Each stick contains about 43–44 kcal.

First, I opened the Corn Potage flavor… As always, the packaging is super convenient—easy to tear open and soft to handle.

Inside, there’s a chunky yellow stick snack waiting to be enjoyed. It’s about as thick as three of Chubby Mom’s daughter’s fingers put together!

우마이봉_사진7

우마이봉_사진8

As you might expect from the corn flavor, it has a rich, toasty corn aroma. I even tried cutting it with a knife to show the cross-section (it might look a bit strange, but I was serious about it!).

You can see there are lots of air pockets inside, which makes it super crispy—just look at the photo!

The downside of being so crispy? It creates a lot of crumbs every time you bite into it!

우마이봉_사진9

우마이봉_사진10

The middle is hollow, just like in the photo below (which is a bit disappointing… why’d they make it hollow? Fill it up, please!). Such a sad thing…

Here’s Chubby Mom’s daughter taking a delicious bite. It’s super salty and tasty! The Corn Potage flavor seems really popular—it’s less intense and spicy, more savory and yummy!

Next up… Pollock Roe flavor! Just like before, the packaging is super easy and convenient to open.

The bright, intense deep orange color really stands out compared to the Corn Potage flavor. And looking inside the bag, you can already tell there’s going to be a lot of seasoning stuck to your fingers from all the flavorful crumbs left behind…

우마에봉_사진13

우마이봉_사진14

Behold… this intense color! A shade that instantly makes your mouth water and gives you a hint of the flavor to come!

Once again, I cut it with a knife to show the cross-section (no one asked me to, but the experiments continue…). Like the Corn Potage flavor, it has lots of air pockets inside, making it super crispy!

Can you already see the seasoning stuck to the bowl? (Yikes!)

우마이봉_사진15

우마이봉_사진16

Once again, there’s a hole right in the middle (so disappointing…)

Chubby Mom’s daughter took another bite. Sure, a lot of crumbs fell everywhere, but it’s super crispy and saltier and spicier than the Corn Potage flavor!

As for whether it really tastes like pollock roe? Honestly, it kind of reminds me of Cheetos… But since Chubby Mom’s daughter isn’t the best judge of taste, maybe the real experts (like Jang-geum and the crew) could tell if it really tastes like pollock roe. (If it tastes like pollock roe, then it’s pollock roe flavor, right?)

우마이봉_사진17

우마이봉_사진18

In the end, I ate them all… like a little piggy. 🐷
It was such a delicious and happy review experience! (Oink oink!)

These salty snacks are perfect for when your mouth is feeling bored or as a great pairing with beer!

They’re affordable, tasty, and great value for money… (if only they didn’t have that hole in the middle, they’d be perfect!)

Highly recommended!!!!

우마이봉_사진19

And that’s a wrap for today’s review…

Next time!! I’ll be bringing you another snack…!!! (The march of the piggies continues 😂)

I’m planning to review all the goodies I bought at Don Quijote in Japan…!!!

Thanks for sticking with me today—stay strong and keep going!!

Alright, that’s all from me—see ya later!
